Day 4: Salzburg

Salzburg is storybook Austria. Standing beside the fast-flowing Salzach River, your gaze is raised inch by inch to the Altstadt's (Old Town) mosaic of graceful domes and spires, the formidable cliff-top fortress and the mountains beyond. It's a view that never fails. It's a backdrop that did the lordly prince-archbishops and home-grown genius Mozart proud. Hohensalzburg Fortress, which dominates the skyline, was built in 1077 and enlarged to its present size by 1519, largest, fully preserved fortress in central Europe. From 1892 the fortress could easily be reached by funicular railway departing from the Festungsgasse. Also in this historic centre, Mozart's birthplace, in the Getriedgasse, the Cathedral, the Horse Pond, St. Peters cemetery, the Nonnberg Nunnery, and the Mirabel Gardens for exquisite flower beds, sculptures, and Dwarves Garden. 2026, commemorates 270 years of Mozart. We return to our hotel to relax before dinner.

Departing after breakfast for a full day's scenic tour through some of the most picturesque scenery you can imagine. Traveling along the Inn Valley to the Zillertal (Ziller Valley) where we follow the river Ziller through beautiful Tyrolean scenery of waterfalls, snow-capped mountains and lush green meadows. We then start our climb over the Gerlos Pass to Krimml Waterfalls where we stop for sightseeing and lunch. (Entrance to falls at own expense).
